Studies done last year by Google Inc and Carnegie Mellon University, show hard drive failure rates are much higher than the manufacturers have reported. While the manufacturers were reporting a .88% failure rate, the studies found closer to a range of 3% to 9% within the first three years.. This means that of the millions of hard drives sold worldwide, 3 out of every 100 drives failed within the first 3 months. 8% or 8 out of every 100 failed around the 2 year mark and 9% failed around 3 years.
